What's goin' on everybody. Accompany me on this post as I go over the past few art events that I visited: IndieCade, DesignerCon, and a Joe Ledbetter signing. Prepare for a lot of pictures! (I'm going to apologize in advance for the quality of some of the pictures. There was quite a lot goin' on at these events. Lol.)

First, IndieCade. IndieCade was held in early October this year. As a brief background, IndieCade is an independent game festival held in downtown Culver City every year. It's fairly young, this year was it's fourth year. This year was my first, and I was pleasantly surprised. At IndieCade, there's a check-in point where you get the essentials for the event: festival program, event listings, map, etc. From there, you have a number of places that you could go to. The way it works is certain stores/locations in Culver are specifically open as a gallery for game creators to showcase their games. The whole festival isn't contained to one big location. It was spread out all over downtown Culver City. The best location, in my opinion, was the Fire Station. Check out the pictures below!

IndieCade

There were these enormous Space Invaders replicas all around Culver!

The coolest venue of the festival, the Fire Station. It was filled with great games and independent game enthusiasts of all kinds: gamers, creators, execs, producers, etc.

The best game I saw there was a game called Bridge. We got a chance to talk to the creator, Ty Taylor, really cool people. The game has a brilliant concept and amazing mechanics. Next, Designer Con. Designer Con was pretty damn awesome this year. It's held in Pasadena every year in November. It's a convention for Vinyl Toys, Urban Art, and Designers. I've been to a few and it gets better every time. This one was by far the best. There were rows upon rows of booths with amazing toys, artwork, and artists. Toward the front, they were shooting webisodes interviewing some of the top designers that showed up this year. Towards the back, there was a stage for featured artists to do live painting. This year I picked up some vinyl toy Mp3 players and some prints. Very cool stuff, check out the pictures below!

Lastly, the Joe Ledbetter signing. Poly Imaginative recently released a line of Chinese Zodiac toys designed by Joe Ledbetter. Joe is probably my favorite designer, so when I heard there would be a signing at Munky King LA, I was as good as there. I picked up my respective year's vinyl toy, year of the Dragon. I got that signed as well as a book that I bought of Joe's a while back. Check out the pictures below!

More Animation Academy

What's goin' on, people. I recently took another trip to Disneyland and visited the Animation Academy again. The character of the session was Tigger. I had already done Tigger and was hoping for someone different, but it's all good. There's always next time. I have yet to post the shots I took at IndieCade at the beginning of last month and DesignerCon which was this past weekend. Look out for those, but until then, enjoy! What up, everybody. Here's a progression piece I did of Guy, the character that I use in SSF4. I'm not very good at Street Fighter by any means, but Marvel on the other hand, that's another story. I've been wanting to do this piece for a while and finally found the perfect opportunity to do it when starting a brand new sketchbook. I used the usual materials: Tombow HB graphite for pencilling, Copics and Steadtlers for inking, and Prismas and Copics for coloring. Hope you guys dig it! Peace!

I Am Super 8 Bit

At long last, here's my post for my visit to the I Am Super 8 Bit gallery. I went about three weeks to a month ago. It was super awesome (haha get it?). At first impression, the gallery seemed fairly small, but that didn't mean it was short of artwork. The left and right walls were filled with awesome pieces of video game inspired artwork, different artists giving their different takes of video game characters, levels, and nostalgia. Down the middle were tables that were hanging from the ceiling. On them were art books by the various artists that contributed to the gallery along with video game merch that was created specifically for the event. Not only was there artwork on the walls, but there were sculptures, maquettes, and other different types of art. At the end of the first room, there was a door that led to an even larger room with even more artwork. It made me wish I was there for opening night. I won't spoil all the suprises, I'll just direct you to the pictures below. Enjoy!

I particularly liked this one a lot. It's the Van Gogh Terrace at Night, but depicted as one of those old school text RPG's, some of the first RPG's ever made.

The top piece was created with neon duct tape on wood. Awesome.

On our way out, we saw this! A huge Atari joystick! And guess what? It actually works, the joystick itself and the button! There are AV cables so you can connect it to a TV. I'm guessing this was on full display on opening night.

Evolution, Championship Series 2011

Delayed as it may be, here's my post about my trip to Evo. Let me start off by saying that, Evo was AMAZING. After hearing about the past years, experiencing this year, and knowing that each year just gets better and better, I'm going to go every year from now on. Every year, Evo is held at Las Vegas. This year, it was held at the Rio hotel. A buddy and I got to the Rio around 12:30 in the afternoon and decided to hit the buffet first. We finished around 2 and made our way to the convention room. On the way there, we saw tons of people with a bunch of fighting game swag, whether it was fight sticks, posters, shirts, etc. Once at the convention center I was so surprised at how huge it was. And, to my approval, there were people playing fighting games, EVERYWHERE. There were booths around that were selling merch along with other booths that were there for promo reasons. All the way down the middle aisle, to the far end of the room, was the main stage. It had an enormous projector, a little setup on stage for players, and tons of chairs set out in front. To the right was a little booth for streaming and commentating. Other than that, the rest were just consoles, monitors, and people duking it out. But enough words, here are some pictures. Enjoy!

I didn't take too many photos of the next day, mostly videos, cuz it was just too hype to do anything else but watch. Top 8 Marvel was AMAZING. I wish I would have stayed for Top 8 Street Fighter. What up, people. Here are some pictures from my recent trip to Comic Con this past weekend. Con this year was awesome. I picked up the usual artist books I get every year, along with some new books and a couple of prints. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to pick up any toys for myself. All of the specific ones I was looking for were sold out by the time I got there. I went on Saturday and Sunday. This year was particularly special because it was the Debut of Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3! I got a chance to get a few rounds in. The game is different enough from MVC3, but not so different as to where old school MVC tactics and fundamentals wont work anymore. I didn't get a chance to play as much as I wanted, but I'll be able to play again for sure because I'm going to Evo in Las Vegas this weekend! It'll be my first Evo, I'm super excited. For those of you that don't know, Evo is the largest fighting game tournament in the world. It's held once a year in Las Vegas. It lasts four days long, but I'll be there for the weekend only just like Comic Con. I'll post pictures of that as well as soon as I get back. Check out the pictures below, sorry the quality of some of them Had to keep moving. Peace.

AWESOME display by VW. They had an artist draw a Star Wars theme with black marker on an all white car, all 5 days of con. I took these pictures Saturday, he had been working on it since Wednesday.

A little outside Con, in the Gaslamp district, they had a Chuck Jones Gallery! We couldn't take pictures inside. There was a Conan O'Brien gallery across the street too but we didn't get around to going.

Kidrobot booth had a Dunny made of black board material and chalk set out for anyone that wanted to draw on it. There are pictures of me signing the back of it, but not on my camera. I'll post them up soon.

And of course, The Capcom Booth, Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3.

These are some pro's that I recognized playing at the cabinet behind us, including Mike Ross on the far right and Nerd Josh playing on the player two side.

Mahvel, Baby!

Ok, I'm going to skip the part where I make a bunch of excuses/comments about not having posted in a long time and just go straight to the art. I've been playing TONS of Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 lately. I was a huge fan of the second one, but with this new Marvel game it's so much better because I'm actually following along while the game is developing all the way from the beginning. I kind of came into Marvel 2 when all of the advanced tactics were developed and perfected. Anyhow, back to the art. Conveniently, I have a bunch Marvel character sketches piled up in my sketchbook. All of them are done with the usual materials: Graphite, Col-Erase, Copics, and Prsima. Storm, Nightcrawler, Spiderman and Venom.

Wow. Greetings to all. It's been quite a while, I know. I failed yet again on updating every month. I think I just missed two months. Anyhow, in the two months that I've been absent from my blog, I've been to Disneyland and California adventure twice. We visited the animation academy yet again, and each time was a different character. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a whole assortment of Disney characters over time. Sketchbook Dump

Hey again. Here's a sketchbook dump for the month of February. I finished these in the past week or so. Had a lot of time while rendering, got bit by the drawing bug again. Anyhow, the first piece is Maximus from Tangled. The animation for Maximus was AMAZING. It was very inspiring, such strong character. This was done with the usual materials: Red Col-Erase and Graphite. The second piece is Captain America (obviously). Started out with Blue Col-Erase, inked with Copics, and colored with Prismas. This is the first character of a weekly thing some of my co-workers and I are doing. We choose a character for the week, and we draw. The third is the faun from Pan's Labyrinth. Just graphite for this one. This is the second character from our Character of the Week at work. That's all for now. Enjoy!

My 2011 Birthday Weekend

This past weekend was my birthday and I celebrated on all three days. I took Friday off from work to go to Disneyland with some of my family. While we were there, we went to the Animation Academy at Disney California Adventure. It was pretty cool, my first time there. The character of the session was Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. It was really fun to see how the rest of my family drew Tigger. It was also interesting to see the process the illustrator used to teach the audience how to draw the character. It was a pretty straightforward method of construction drawing. She deliberately chose the easiest approach that would give everyone the best results which is smart for a theme park attraction. "Your're a mean one..." Happy Holidays!!!

Happy holidays everyone! Sorry again for the lack of posting, but the last two months of the year are always so busy for me. Anyhow, I'll keep this one short. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. I hope life has been as good to everyone else as it's been to me this year and I hope that it will continue to be good to each and every one of us. On to the post below, I decided to draw The Grinch. I apologize for the quality, I had to take a picture instead of scanning because I drew this one pretty big (13x13).I haven't drawn him yet, ever, and decided he'd be the perfect holiday character to draw (AND it was SUPER fun). I'm not finished with him yet, this is just step one. I'll be placing some vellum over him and doing an ink rendition of this piece as well. Usual materials used, green col-erase and Derwent graphite this time. The second step of this piece will be coming in the next few days, next year. Happy New Year everyone!

Cut & Paste Los Angeles 2010

So, over the weekend, I went to this design event in Hollywood called "Cut & Paste". Awesome event. You can check out the website here, http://cutandpaste.com/. It was held at the Music Box theater. For those of you who aren't familiar, awesome venue. The art direction and design of the place itself was amazing to look at. I'll save trying to explain what it looked like and just direct you to the pictures I took below. Anyhow, Cut & Paste is a design contest. There's a 2D and 3D category. The artists were given 15 minutes to create a design based on a theme that was given to them beforehand, so they had a little time to prepare. They created their own assets on stage, most of them using photography, imported them onto their machine, and got to work. There were only four contestants at a time, that way we were able to see their workflow on giant projector screens above the stage. There were two heats and a finals round for the 2D category and one death match heat for the 3D category. It was really awesome and interesting to see other people's workflow. You realize what you really prefer as an artist, how your mind works as opposed to others, and most importantly that there is no wrong or right way to create art. Other than the amazing venue and the awesome event, it was open bar before and after the the actual event (which was ideal for the company I was with). Also, one of the sponsors that was there was Converse, and they were holding a contest. You sign up, grab a template of a Converse shoe, and start designing with the materials they had at the table. The winning shoe gets a limited line created. Initially, I wasn't going to participate. But, my cousin, genius as he is (heheheheh) told me to just draw his face on the shoe and it would win for sure. So I did. Check out the photo below. I'm actually half-pleased with how it turned out hahahah. I just wanted to draw it to have fun. In closing (I know... WORDY ass post... Brace yourself for a lot of pics too), this event was real live proof that ART TAKES TIME. Until next time.

Many Faces of Jason Todd

Darnit, I was doing so well. I missed last month. Hopefully i'll be able to post twice this month as to kind of make up for it. Anyhow, I just saw Under the Red Hood recently, and it was awesome like most Batman animated movies. I did this piece mostly in photoshop. I sketched it out in photoshop, did some clean lines in flash, brought it back into photoshop and colored it up. It's Jason Todd as the Red Hood and as Hush. Hope you can dig it. LA Bike Ride, Catching the White Rabbit

Yo! This is a picture I took with my phone while out on a ride in LA. We met up around 9pm on Vine. Then we biked all over LA pretty much and ended up at Hollywood and Vermont to eat at the Filipino Fusion Food Truck, the White Rabbit. The ride was AWESOME. And the food was FANTASTIC. Chicken Adobo burritos, Melon juice, etc. Gotta check it out if you get the chance. My bike is the only BMX there. Can you spot it??? Until here, artwork to come soon!

Yo yo! Here are some pictures that I took while at the parade. I didn't take too many of the actual players because I was taking a video as they came by. First 3D Post

Hello everyone! I know I forgot to post last month. Last month was especially hectic with my family in town and lots of other stuff. But, as a way to kind of make up for it, i'm doing my very first 3D post! Hahaha which is kind of weird because I've been doing 3D for a while now and I do it every day at work. Anyhow, we had a slow day at work today so I thought I would see if I remembered how to use Zbrush. Turns out I do! So here's what I came up with. First I quickly sketched out turnarounds of a bust of this Demon Monster dude. Then, I built the base mesh in Maya. Then, I went into Zbrush and started sculpting away! This was done in a few hours. I didn't take too much time on it. Anyway, hope you can dig it! Until here, peace!

Hello, once again. I'm doing pretty well this year, I would say. Posting fairly regularly. I wanted to post this one earlier, but this was the first in a new sketchbook and I'm always so pressured to make the first page good so people will want to keep looking. Haha. Anyhow, I did a bunch of thumbnails but I never got to one that I liked. Then I finally decided that I was putting too much pressure on myself, so I just went for it and had fun. Hope it is satisfactory! I did this one with Red and Blue Col-Erase, Copic black and French Grays, and graphite. Hope you can dig it!

Greetings, everyone. Could this be it? Could this be the year that I actually post regularly? I've gotten the urge to draw A LOT. I draw on a fairly regular basis, but I've been bitten by the inspiration bug which has caused me to draw a whole lot more. We'll see how long this lasts. Haha. Hello, once again. It's been too long... again... I know. I have failed miserably at what I've tried to accomplish on my blog. Bummer. But it's still a place for me to vent, post artwork, and such so here I am. Doing what I do. Work has gotten VERY busy. GOOD busy. Yo yo yo. Here's another speed painting that I did at work. Actually had some free time at the end of the day so I thought I would whip something up. Same as the last ones, Photoshop single layer paintings. This one was pretty quick, 10-15 minutes or so. I'm really going to try to put more diverse and complete work up on my blog regularly. UP Book Signing

What up, my good peeps. So the past weekend was AWESOME. Lakers closed out the series on Friday, woohoo!!! On Saturday, I went to the book signing of UP. Ronnie Del Carmen, one of my favorite story artists and the Story Supervisor and Lead Story Artist on UP, was there to sign books and release new ones of his own. I went with my cousin and saw some of my friends there. I nabbed The Art of Up, And There You Are by Ronnie, and Paper Biscuit 2 also by Ronnie. I got a chance to meet him and get all my books signed. He's super cool, and I got him to sign my UP book in Tagalog! The following day, my cousin and I went to go see the movie. It was AMAZING. Highly recommend it. See it. I give it, two thumbs UP!

Yo yo. I know it's been some time again. Haven't really had the time to actually post anything. Things have been busy at work. GOOD busy. Anyhow, here's a piece that I did while rendering some things. My co-worker has this awesome Hellboy toy on his desk next to mine so I thought, why not. Done with the usual traditional materials I use: red col-erase, copic blacks, copic french greys, and white charcoal. I hope it is satisfactory. Til' next time!

Marker Sketch Dump

Hello, hello, hello. I know it's been a while, but here are some marker pieces from my sketchbook. This time and from now on I will be adding a watermark to my work because a lot of artists I follow and know have been ripped off a lot for their work lately. Can't imagine anyone that would want to steal my artwork when there's so much better out there but hey, safety first! Anyhow, I did the Wolvie and Ang with Prisma tonals, but the Warrior dude I did with Copic tonals which I like using better. I also used white charcoal for the highlights. I tried to make these ones rather quick. 15-20 minutes a piece give or take. I'll be dumping some more soon from my sketchbook. I have jury duty (blah) like this whole month so I have A LOT of time to sketch. Things are great. And how about them Lakers huh?!?!? =D Woohoo! Just came off of beating Boston for the second time and today we beat the Cavaliers for the second time, snapping their at home winning streak for the season! Both without Bynum (hope he gets well VERY soon) and the latter without a 100% Kobe (get well soon Mamba)! It is GOOD to be a Laker fan. Til' here, Peace.

Thoughts and Rorschach

Hello, again. So before I launch into explaining this piece I would like to shed some light on what I've been up to and what's been happening lately.

I recently graduated college. Woohoo! It felt that way for about the first two weeks then I began to find myself being extremely bored very often regardless of all the art I was producing. At one point, I wanted to make a phone call using the house phone, so I walked around my house for about thirty minutes to discover that we didn't have a house phone anymore! Makes sense though, who needs one with all these cell-phones nowadays? Then after many profound things going on in my brain, I started to doubt my value as an artist.

BUT! Good news. There are things in the works and they are beginning to look up. I'll be posting up soon, hopefully, on how things turn out. But for now, on to the post!

Very cool character from Watchmen. Reading it again lately. Trying to refresh memory for the movie soon to be released. Lying in sketchbook for a while. Thought it time to post. Materials used: HB Graphite Pencil, Tombow Brush Pen, Prisma Color Markers, White Charcoal. Must take note of charcoal smearing if left in sketchbook for too long.

Here's another character from the Batman universe, Cassandra Cain. Also known as the new Batgirl. This was done for one of my friend's girlfriend. She dug the Catwoman I did and requested for Batgirl. I used the same materials as I did on the other ones. This one was pretty fun to do as well. I wasn't too familiar with the character so I had to do some research. Plenty fun. I want to do Solomon Grundy next. If I have time I will. Til' here. Peace

Here it is, folks! The tribute that I said I would do for Heath Ledger. RIP Heath, fantastic job as the Joker. If you haven't seen the Dark Knight yet, SEE IT. This piece was especially fun to do for a number of reasons. One, because of all the mixed media that I got to use: HB Pencil, Blue Col-Erase, Red Col-Erase, Green Col-Erase, White Charcoal, and Copic Ink. Two, because it reminds me of the Joker in the new film and how awesome it is! Bottom line, Dark Knight, see it. Peace.

Two pieces from one of my recent illustration classes. He gave us archetypes to choose from, ones that weren't of the norm, but that made it all the more fun. We had to do two versions. Of course these started out as rough sketches first. The first version I did traditionally: Colored Pencil, Art Stix, Pen & Ink, and white out. The second version I did digitally: Flash and Photoshop. That pretty much sums it all up. Til' next time!

Advanced Web Animation

It's been a while since I've posted. I've really got post more often. -sigh-
Anyhow, the project that I've pitched is well under way and we're almost out of pre-production.

In the meantime, I'm doing another short for my advanced web animation class. Here is the lineup of the characters. I'll post them individually, the colored versions, and some backgrounds when I have more time.

This was done with pencil, brush pen, and prismacolor.

They're called the Beebops. They're a series of paintings of jazz musicians. Each one plays an instrument. More on this later. Til' here!

Here's another progression, but of Wonder Woman this time. I started with a Graphite sketch then scanned it in. I printed onto cardstock and colored and inked it with Prisma Markers and Brush Pen. I used white out for the highlights. Lots of fun, this one. Took a liking to her character from watching JLU again.
